Summary: Mercator's Atlas, the most famous atlas in the world, caused a sensation when it was first printed in several fascicles back in 1595. Besides being the first to use the word 'atlas' to describe a systematic collection of maps, Gerard Mercator also designed the so-called Mercator projection which is still used today. Very few complete copies of Mercator's Atlas have survived and of these only a couple are coloured. This book provides an introduction to the life and work of the great cosmographer and reproduces in true colours all the maps from the 'Editio principissima' preserved in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. The work pays tribute to the inventor of the modern world view, the five-hundredth anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated in 2012.
